Shields Health Care to open new imaging centers, clinics: 4 things to know

Shields Health Care Group, a family-owned company based in Quincy, Mass., has embarked on a significant expansion in response to growing demand for outpatient clinics that provide medical services at lower costs than hospitals, according to a report from The Boston Globe.

Here are four things to know about the company's plans.

1. Shields is in discussions to open at least six outpatient clinics over the next two years, adding to the 43 it already operates.

2. Shields plans to open two new imaging centers in Massachusetts and at least four more in two newer markets for the company: New Hampshire and Maine. The deals have not been finalized at this time.

3. In addition, Shields has agreed to operate an outpatient surgery center, scheduled to open in 2017, for Worcester, Mass.-based UMass Memorial Medical Center.

4. Shields CEO Thomas A. Shields told The Boston Globe the company is well positioned to grow because of the cost pressures on healthcare providers as well as on patients.
