Walmart to employees: Go to college for $1 a day

Walmart will subsidize college degrees for its 1.5 million associates in the U.S., which will allow employees to obtain degrees for about $1 a day, the company said May 30.

Walmart and Sam's Club employees can earn associate's and bachelor's degrees in business or supply chain management under the program. Three nonprofit schools targeting adult learners will offer the degrees: the University of Florida in Gainesville; Irvine, Calif.-based Brandman University; and Bellevue (Neb.) University.

Employees will pay $1 a day for their programs, while Walmart will cover associates' tuition, books and fees. Walmart is also partnering with Guild Education, an online education program, to pair coaches with each associate to help with applications and the enrollment process.

"Investing in the personal and professional success of our associates is vital to Walmart's future success," the company's CEO Greg Foran said. "We know training and learning opportunities empower associates to deliver for customers while growing and advancing in their careers."
