The shows will be based on MGM’s film and television catalog and will be financed through advertisements, though paying subscribers will be able to watch ad-free. Walmart acquired Vudu in 2010 but has done little with the platform, on which users spend 1.9 hours per month, compared to 25 hours per month on Netflix.
The MGM programs will stream on Vudu’s “Movies on Us” service, which started in 2016. They will be available beginning in the first quarter of 2019. Walmart said it plans to partner with other studios to license exclusive content for Vudu.
