Uber faces potential driver cap in London, its largest European market

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has asked the U.K. Department for Transport for the right to limit the number of ride-sharing app drivers in his city, according to Fortune.

The number of ride-sharing drivers in London has jumped from 60,000 in 2011 to 110,000 in 2018. Mr. Khan said the rise in drivers has led to increased congestion and pollution in the city, and cited licensing caps for ride-sharing drivers recently adopted by the New York City Council as precedence for the proposal.

London is Uber's largest European market. The city considered revoking Uber's license to operate due to insufficient background checks for drivers, but eventually granted the company a 15-month probationary license in June.
