Trump names Larry Kudlow to replace Gary Cohn as top economic advisor

Larry Kudlow, a conservative television personality and former banker, accepted President Donald Trump's offer for director of the National Economic Council, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Mr. Kudlow is a senior contributor for CNBC and has anchored multiple shows on the network. Before his media career, Mr. Kudlow was the chief economist at Bear Stearns and also served as a staff economist at the New York Federal Reserve. He also served as associate director for economics at the Office of Management and Budget under President Ronald Reagan, according to Business Insider.

Gary Cohn left his position as President Trump's top economic adviser after disagreeing with the move to raise tariffs on steel and aluminum. Mr. Kudlow served as an informal economic adviser during President Trump's campaign, and though he favors free trade, this difference in opinion does not appear to trouble President Trump.

"We don't agree on everything, but in this case I think that's good," President Trump said, according to CNBC. "I want to have different opinions. We agree on most. He now has come around to believing in tariffs as a negotiating point."
