Qualcomm hit with $1.2B fine over exclusivity deal with Apple: 4 things to know

European Union antitrust regulators issued a 997 million-euro ($1.23 billion) fine against Qualcomm on Wednesday for paying Apple to use only its baseband chips, which connect smartphones and tablets to cellular networks, in its iPhones and iPads.

Here are four things to know.

1. EU antitrust regulators said Qualcomm paid Apple billions of dollars from 2011 to 2016 on the condition Apple would not buy from Qualcomm rivals. The contract hindered competition in the market for baseband chips, according to The Wall Street Journal.

2. The EU took into account Qualcomm's market dominance in its investigation, which was launched in 2015, according to Reuters.

3. The contract at issue is no longer in force, and Qualcomm is facing more competition from rivals such as Intel, according to Reuters.

4. Qualcomm said it would immediately appeal the decision.
