Procter & Gamble tries to trademark ‘LOL,’ ‘NBD,’ other millennial-friendly acronyms

Procter & Gamble has applied for trademarks on three-letter acronyms, including “LOL” and “NBD,” to use in liquid soap, dishwashing detergent, hard surface cleaners and air fresheners, according to CNBC.

Here are three things to know:

1. P&G has applied to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to use “LOL” (which stands for Laughing Out Loud), “WTF” (What The F—), “NBD” (No Big Deal) and “FML” (F— My Life), according to CNBC.

2. Although P&G has not disclosed precisely how it intends to use the acronyms, CNBC noted P&G may use the acronyms to help market products to millennials.

3. The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has sought clarification from P&G, which has until January to respond, according to Ad Age.
