Nasdaq breaks 7,000: 4 notes on 2018's first session

The Nasdaq closed above 7,000 for the first time Tuesday as U.S. stocks climbed in the first session of 2018, Reuters reports.

Here are four notes on the gains.

1. Apple, Facebook, Amazon and Alphabet drove recent growth.

2. The technology index .SPLRCT grew 1.4 percent Tuesday. The index saw a 37 percent hike in 2017, making it the best-performing S&P 500 sector, according to Reuters.

3. Investors are optimistic more market gains will come in 2018, assisted by U.S. tax reform.

4. Comparatively, the Nasdaq broke 6,000 in April 2017 and closed above 5,000 in 2015.
