Ford to pilot driverless cars in Miami: 4 things to know

Ford is piloting self-driving cars in Miami, Sherif Marakby, the company's vice president of autonomous vehicles and electrification, wrote in a Medium blog post.

Here are four things to know about the project.

1. The first part of Ford's initiative will include pilot programs with Domino's and Postmates. Ford's pilot with Domino's for pizza delivery already launched in Miami, while the Postmates partnership will roll out in March.

2. Ford will take what it gleans from consumer responses to these programs and apply the feedback to a self-driving car set to launch in 2021.

3. Mr. Marakby wrote Miami will also house Ford's first autonomous vehicle operations terminal. "Situated close to downtown, it will be the base from which we'll develop our vehicle management processes and house our test fleet. The vehicles will be washed and have their sensors cleaned here; routine maintenance will be conducted, including troubleshooting problems that arise and more," he wrote.

4. Ford plans to expand its service to other cities "when the time comes," Mr. Marakby added.
