Zocdoc applies AI model to verify patients' insurance details

Zocdoc, an online scheduling service for healthcare organizations, introduced Zocdoc Insurance Checker to help patients verify their plan details Oct. 24.

Zocdoc trained an artificial intelligence model to provide patients with relevant plan information based on photos of medical insurance cards. To use Zocdoc Insurance Checker, a patient uploads a photo of their insurance card, rather than manually selecting from a list of plans.

The Zocdoc Insurance Checker extracts information from the card to validate coverage prior to a patient booking an appointment on the Zocdoc scheduling platform. Once a patient selects an appointment, Zocdoc will attempt to confirm whether the physician is in-network and the expected copay.

The company also shares insurance information with the selected physician's office to reduce the need to validate the patient's coverage with manual confirmation calls.
