In a Dec. 27 op-ed for The Globe and Mail, Dr. Topol, who serves as director and founder of the Scripps Research Translational Institute, described medical advances of AI, including the use of deep learning algorithms to improve medical scans and applying the technology to more accurately diagnose eye and skin conditions.
Over the next decade, however, Dr. Topol said he expects to see AI help healthcare organizations give physicians and patients “the gift of time — to get back to where medicine was decades ago, when the relationship was characterized by a deep bond with trust and empathy.”
AI and deep learning tools will continue to help free physicians from computer keyboard entry associated with documentation regulations. The technology will also help improve the accuracy of algorithms that patients can use to diagnose their own common, non-serious medical conditions, according to Dr. Topol.
