Crouse Health deploys AI-enabled stroke detection

Syracuse, N.Y.-based Crouse Health has implemented artificial intelligence software from startup Viz.ai to speed stroke diagnosis and triage, according to local healthcare news outlet In Good Health.

Viz.ai's technology uses deep learning to analyze brain scans and immediately alert specialists of suspected acute ischemic stroke.

"In most hospitals, the CT scan process typically takes 30 to 60 minutes," Jameson Crumb, clinical director of the Crouse Neuroscience Institute, told In Good Health. "This software cuts that timeframe in half, allowing us to move that patient toward the best individualized treatment plan much quicker and in a more synchronized fashion."

The startup, which recently raised $50 million with contributions from Alphabet investment arm GV, has partnered with hundreds of hospitals and health systems, including Winston-Salem, N.C.-based Novant Health and Park Ridge, Ill.-based Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in recent months.
