AWS, General Catalyst partner on healthcare AI tools

Amazon Web Services and General Catalyst are teaming up to develop artificial intelligence-powered tools to address common challenges in healthcare.

Four details:

1. Under the partnership, the venture capital firm's portfolio companies will use AWS' technology and data services to develop and deploy AI tools for health systems "at an unprecedented scale and speed," according to a Jan. 13 news release. Financial terms of the partnership were not disclosed.

2. General Catalyst's Aidoc, which employs AI to analyze medical imaging, and Commure, which automates administrative processes for clinicians, are among the first companies to participate in the partnership. While the partnership is a multi-year agreement, new tools from Aidoc and Commure are expected in 2025, leaders at the companies told CNBC.

3. A key goal of the collaboration is to fast-track AI startups' development and go-to-market process.

"Without a strong partner like Amazon and AWS to stand alongside them, to co-develop and support these companies … it's not going to move as fast as we hope," Chris Bischoff, General Catalyst's director of global healthcare investing, told the news outlet.

"GC has spent a lot of time thinking about how health systems can transform themselves, and we recognize that it's not going to be through 1,000 companies, and we need solutions that are really enterprise grade," Mr. Bischoff said. "Amazon shares the same vision, so we are starting with these two," he said, referring to Aidoc and Commure.

4. AWS and General Catalyst both have a strong presence in healthcare. General Catalyst has closed more than 60 digital health deals in the last five years. In 2024, Health Assurance Transformation Corp., which is owned by General Catalyst, acquired Akron, Ohio-based Summa Health for $485 million. AWS offers more services specific to healthcare and life sciences than any other cloud provider, the company said in a news release.
