During an April 30 panel hosted by Stanford (Calif.) University’s Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence, the two Stanford professors said artificial intelligence isn’t likely to reach major breakthroughs in the next few years. They said the technology is more likely to create meaningful change in the industry over the next decade.
Dr. Ng said progress in the technology industry “tends to happen slowly and then very quickly.” He said healthcare technology’s progression is still in its slow stage.
The researchers said the development of healthcare AI still faces several challenges, as clinical algorithms are often trained on inadequate data or fail to address the right issues. They also said healthcare AI developers have not yet figured out how to incorporate non-digitized data, such as human behavior, into their product design.
