Health systems are seeing early success with AI-powered tools.

Here is a look at how AI is paying off at four health systems, as reported by Becker’s:

Mass General Brigham, based in Somerville, Mass., has implemented a generative AI-powered ambient documentation tool to help draft clinical notes and alleviate administrative burdens for clinicians.

The health system initially piloted the technology with 20 physicians, evaluating its impact on workflows, patient safety and AI performance. After the tool showed no signs of hallucinations and received strong support from clinicians, the program rapidly expanded to about 800 physicians and advanced practice providers.

Early results have been promising: 60% of providers said the tool made them more likely to extend their clinical careers, 20% reported a reduction in burnout symptoms, and 80% said they spent more time maintaining eye contact with patients thanks to the AI’s ambient listening capabilities.

Other health systems are reporting similar gains.

At the Permanente Medical Group in Northern California, physicians saved a combined 16,000 hours in documentation time by using an AI-powered scribe.

Sioux Falls, S.D.-based Sanford Health also saw significant improvements after deploying an ambient AI documentation tool. About 88% of clinicians reported a reduction in burnout or fatigue, 90% said their job satisfaction increased, and 90% noted an improvement in work-life balance. Additionally, 95% of clinicians said the tool reduced their cognitive burden.

Meanwhile, Stanford Health Care in Palo Alto, Calif., developed an AI tool to streamline billing operations. The system automatically drafts responses to patient billing inquiries, which representatives then review and edit. During a pilot, the tool saved about one minute per message — adding up to approximately 17 hours saved overall.
