Summa Health adds 190 HealthSpan physicians to its ACO

Akron, Ohio-based Summa Health System announced Monday it added 190 new physicians to its accountable care organization, NewHealth Collaborative, bringing its total number of participating physicians to 700.

The physicians come from HealthSpan Physicians Medical Group, part of Cincinnati-based Mercy Health.

"We're extremely pleased to add the talent and expertise of HealthSpan Physicians to our ACO and to the growing number of providers and areas of practice that we represent," NHC President Mark Terpylak, DO, said in a statement. "The partnership exhibited in NHC between Summa and our employed and independent physician partners underscores our shared commitment to provide integrated, coordinated and value-based care and a superior experience for people throughout our communities."

In 2014, Summa Health's ACO generated nearly $12 million in savings for Medicare, making it the only ACO in Ohio that year to earn shared savings as a first year Medicare Shared Savings Program participant, according to Summa Health.
