CEO to know: Dr. Gianrico Farrugia of Mayo Clinic’s Florida campus

Gianrico Farrugia, MD, became CEO of Mayo Clinic’s Jacksonville, Fla.-based campus on Jan. 1, 2015.

In this role, Dr. Farrugia works closely with Bob Brigham, chief administrative officer of Mayo’s Florida campus, to lead operations and expand Mayo’s footprint in the region.

Dr. Farrugia has been with Mayo Clinic for more than 26 years as a professor and gastroenterologist. He worked in the division of gastroenterology and hepatology and division of physiology and biomedical engineering at Mayo Clinic’s main campus in Rochester, Minn., and taught physiology and biomedical engineering at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine.

Dr. Farrugia most recently served as director of the Mayo Clinic Center for Individualized Medicine since 2011 and director of Mayo Clinic’s Enteric Neuroscience Program since 2004. Before that, he was research chair of the Department of Medicine, among other leadership roles.

He earned his medical degree from the Royal University of Malta Medical School in Malta and completed his residency at Mayo Clinic. He earned the clinical investigator fellowhip in gastroenterology and a research fellowship in physiology and biophysics at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine.
