UMC and UPH Merger to Form $1.2 Billion Arizona Giant

University Medical Center Corp. and University Physicians Healthcare, both in Tuscon, Ariz., have announced they will merge to form a $1.2 billion entity on July 1.

The new entity is informally called University of Arizona Medicine. A formal name will be announced in the next 30 days, UMC CEO Kevin Burns said in a memo to employees, according to the Arizona Daily Star.

The new enterprise will have 6,500 to 7,000 employees. When current expansions are completed in a few years, the two hospitals will have about 850 beds between them.
