Few details of the transaction were disclosed. Executives at both organizations will now conduct due diligence and hope to reach a definitive affiliation deal by the end of this year.

Jeffrey Drop, senior vice president of CHI’s Fargo Division, said in a news release that a partnership between CHI and St. Alexius “would ensure a viable, innovative, high-quality care option for residents in light of healthcare reform and other changes in the region.”

St. Alexius, a Catholic hospital with 306 beds, is one of the largest hospitals in Bismarck. If approved, CHI would move into the western territory of Sioux Falls, S.D.-based Sanford Health, which operates a 228-bed hospital, four multispecialty clinics and seven primary care clinics in Bismarck.
