1. University of Minnesota Wants to Buy Fairview Health
In a move that would halt a Midwest mega-merger, the University of Minnesota indicated it would like to purchase Minneapolis-based Fairview Health Services.

5. Catholic Health Initiatives, PeaceHealth End Partnership Talks
Englewood, Colo.-based Catholic Health Initiatives and Vancouver, Wash.-based PeaceHealth agreed to suspend their discussions after signing a nonbinding agreement with intent to affiliate in August 2012.

Boston-based Massachusetts General Hospital’s plan to acquire Northampton, Mass.-based Cooley Dickinson Hospital was discussed at a public hearing as a step to determine whether a certificate of need would be issued.

8. Advocate Health Care Pledges $200M to Sherman in Hoped-For Merger
Oak Brook, Ill.-based Advocate Health Care made a nonbinding pledge to invest $200 million over five years into Elgin, Ill.-based Sherman Health, which signed a letter of intent to merge with Advocate in October 2012.

9. HMA Officially Takes Reins at Bayfront Health System
Naples, Fla.-based Health Management Associates officially launched its joint venture partnership with Bayfront Health System in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Ontario, Calif.-based hospital chain Prime Healthcare Services completed its purchase of two Kansas hospitals from Denver-based Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth Health System.

12. Emanuel Medical Center in Georgia, ER Hospitals Sign Management Agreement
Emanuel Medical Center, a 72-bed hospital based in Swainsboro, Ga., signed a joint management and lease agreement with ER Hospitals, a hospital management group based in Salt Lake City.

13. Ascension Health Finalizes Marian Health System Merger
St. Louis-based Ascension Health, the largest Catholic health system in the United States, officially grew its base further, completing its acquisition of Marian Health System, a Tulsa, Okla.-based provider with three regional health systems.

14. UNC Health Care, Johnston Health Enter Exclusive Partnership Talks
Johnston Health, a public health system based in Smithfield, N.C., and Chapel Hill, N.C.-based UNC Health Care entered exclusive negotiations for a strategic partnership.
