Maryland is about to celebrate the opening of its first new medical school in 100 years; it is slated to open this fall, The Mocoshow reported July 23.
Here is what to know:
1. The Meritus School of Osteopathic Medicine in Hagerstown, Md., will be a four-year school with 90 medical students in its first class. Future classes are expected to have 180 students.
2. In May, the school selected Brian Kessler, DO, to be the new dean of the school. He started his role on July 1.
3. In June, the school offered more than $1.6 million in scholarships to 15 students in its first class. This included one full scholarship and 14 partial scholarships. Although some are standard grants awarded annually based on merit or need, several are structured as forgivable loans and require students to work for the health system for a period of time after graduation.
4. The school is on Meritus Medical Center’s campus and includes student housing adjacent to the campus. Its main building, D.M. Bowman Academic Hall, is a 200,000-square-foot, five-story building that was completed in December.
5. The Meritus School will become the third medical school in the state, preceded by Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and the University of Maryland School of Medicine, both based in Baltimore.
