Since creating its Environmental Sustainability Steering Committee in 2010, Harborview Medical Center has increased its recycling, reduced its regulated medical waste, cut its greenhouse gas emissions, added bike racks and garden spaces and committed to all six HHI Challenges. Harborview’s Ninth & Jefferson Building, which houses specialty services, is a LEED Gold-certified building. Given its achievements, Harborview was named a Practice Greenhealth Top 25 Environmental Excellence Award honoree two years running, as well as a member of Practice Greenhealth’s Circles of Excellence for chemical reduction, greening the OR, sustainable food services and environmentally preferable purchasing.
