Robert M. Wachter, MD. Professor and Chair of the Department of Medicine at the University of California San Francisco. Dr. Wachter has published more than 200 articles and six books on the topics of healthcare quality, safety and health policy. He coined the term “hospitalist” in the 1990s and is largely credited as being the founder and academic leader of the field. He is the editor of the AHRQ Patient Safety Network, the federal patient safety portal, and AHRQ WebM&M, a patient safety journal, and he is also a past president of the Society of Hospital Medicine. At UCSF, Dr. Wachter appoints faculty to the department of medicine and is chief of the division of hospitalist medicine.
