Ms. McGiffert joined Consumer Unions in 1991 where she began working on Texas health issues including care access, health system reform, physician and hospital regulation and measuring quality of care. In 2003, she launched a national campaign advocating for hospitals to make patient infection rates public, which resulted in the passage of legislation in 30 states requiring hospitals to share infection rates. The success of the legislation at the state level spurred the federal government to create national hospital infection public reporting program in 2011.
