Hitinder Gurm, MD. Associate Professor of Internal Medicine and Cardiology at the University of Michigan Frankel Cardiovascular Center.

Dr. Gurm was recently awarded the Michigan Health & Hospital Association Keystone Center Patient Safety & Quality Leadership Award for his role directing the Blue Cross Blue Shield Cardiovascular Consortium–Percutaneous Coronary Intervention Collaborative Quality Initiative. The initiative is a statewide collaborative that uses a registry of angioplasty patient data. Its efforts have assisted in the reduction of key complications like unnecessary blood transfusions. Dr. Gurm’s work helped reduce the rate of potentially inappropriate angioplasties in Michigan from 8.6 percent to 1.7 percent over a four-year period. Dr. Gurm advocates for risk assessment through extensive writings and speaking engagements — his patient safety leadership extends throughout the cardiology community.
