Unity Medical and Surgical Hospital
Location: Mishawka, Ind.
Type of company: Hospital/health system
Meet the organization: After opening in November 2009, Unity Medical and Surgical Hospital — a physician-owned acute-care hospital with 29 private rooms — now employs 136 people. Its nurse-to-patient ratio never goes above 3:1, and it was recently ranked the No. 1 hospital in Indiana for patient satisfaction based on HCAHPS scores.
Added benefits: The company supports its employees’ futures by offering an automatic match to employees’ 401(k) up to 4 percent. Additionally, even though the hospital received rate increases (of 11 percent in 2014 and 6 percent in 2015) during the open enrollment period, it took the rate increases on itself so employees did not have to pay more for health insurance. To keep work fun, employees participate in a variety of events year-round, including a chili cook-off, a summer fitness challenge and several special staff lunches, including one for Mardi Gras and a Labor Day picnic.
