University of Alabama Hospital at Birmingham. UAB Hospital houses a 21-bed cardiac care unit specializing in procedures such as heart transplants and cardiopulmonary rehabilitation. The hospital was first in Alabama to develop a comprehensive heart valve program in 2012, and since then more than 500 patients have undergone transcatheter aortic valve replacements there. U.S. News & World Report ranked UAB Hospital among the top 50 hospitals in the nation for cardiology and heart surgery in 2017-18, and CareChex ranked the hospital No. 2 in Alabama for major cardiac surgery. The hospital also earned a three-start rating, the highest possible rating, from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons.
