University of Chicago Medicine, a 550-bed academic medical center on the school’s campus, is home to one of the largest heart transplant and ventricular assist device programs in the region. More than 20 cardiac-specific clinical trials are currently underway on campus and UC has received more than $15 million in funding this year from the National Institutes of Health Heart, Lung and Blood Institute. In September, University of Chicago physicians implanted a two-gram cardiac pacemaker directly in a patient’s right ventricle, making him the first person in Illinois to receive the device, which is about 10-times smaller than conventional pacemakers and does not require surgery. The hospital, ranked No. 6 in the state by U.S. News & World Report, is affiliated with the highly selective Pritzker School of Medicine.
