City of Hope (Duarte, Calif.). The City of Hope Comprehensive Cancer Center began focusing on cancer research and treatment in the late 1940s. The center received a National Cancer Institute designation as a Comprehensive Cancer Center in 1998. Today, more than 200 physicians and scientists affiliated with the center are working to develop innovative, disease-fighting strategies in the battle against cancer and build on some of the basic research findings attributed to City of Hope. City of Hope is recognized as a Blue Distinction Center for Complex & Rare Cancers.
