Michigan Medicine (Ann Arbor). Michigan Medicine’s orthopedics department has its roots in the University of Michigan’s first hospital, founded in 1873. Since then, the department has expanded to include total joint replacement, spine surgery, sports medicine and the state’s first hand transplant program, launched in September 2015. Michigan Medicine’s University Hospital participates in the Michigan Arthroplasty Registry Collaborative Quality Initiative, founded by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, to gather and report quality data on hip and knee replacements. As of the end of 2016, the registry contained 141,822 cases, and analysis of registry data shows over the four years between 2012 and 2016, the percentage of Michigan patients discharged to a nursing home after primary hip or knee arthroplasty dropped from 23 percent to 16.1 percent. Additionally, MARCQI hospitals saved $1.05 million in cost avoidance from decreased readmissions. U.S. News & World Report recognized Michigan Medicine’s University Hospital among the top 50 hospitals in the nation for adult orthopedics for 2017-18.
