The Massachusetts General Hospital Corrigan Minehan Heart Center offers 11 condition-specific programs and is an international referral center for a number of conditions, including hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and thoracic aortic disease. Since opening one of its first cardiac units in 1916, Massachusetts General has made several contributions to the cardiology field, such as the first-of-its-kind heart monitor to detect and treat arrhythmias and pioneering the development of pacemakers. The center also conducts research through it 35,000-square-foot Cardiovascular Research Center, which was founded in 1990 and aims to pioneer new treatments for heart disease patients. In 2009 and 2010, scientists at the research center identified a master heart stem cell that holds great promise for recreating heart tissue to repair damaged hearts. Massachusetts General has been named one of the top 50 hospitals for cardiology and heart surgery by U.S. News & World Report.
