University of Florida Health Shands | 100 great hospitals in America 2016

UF Health Shands (Gainesville, Fla.). UF Health Shands Hospital was established in 1958, though it was called UF Teaching Hospital at the time. The name was changed to include Shands in 1965, after William Augustine Shands, a former Florida senator whose efforts to enhance the Gainesville community led to the establishment of the teaching hospital.

UF Health Shands Hospital includes the UF Health Shands Cancer Hospital and UF Health Shands Children's Hospital. The hospital campus features a Level I trauma center that serves more than 2,000 patients a year, a Level III neonatal intensive care unit and one of Florida's four regional burn centers. Roughly 900 UF faculty physicians and more than 8,000 nurses practice at UF Health Shands Hospital across approximately 100 specialty and subspecialty medical areas.

The hospital has achieved Magnet designation for nursing excellence from the American Nurses Credentialing Center, and five of its nursing care units currently hold a Beacon Award for Excellence. The award — which can be earned for gold, silver and bronze levels — is a three-year designation for units that successfully achieve superior patient outcomes and meet AACN's healthy work environment standards, bestowed by the American Association of Critical Care Nurses. In its 2015-16 ratings, U.S. News & World Report ranked UF Health Shands Hospital among the top hospitals in the nation in seven adult specialties and seven pediatric specialties. In 2016, Healthgrades gave the hospital Pulmonary Care Excellence Award for the third year in a row.
