Sentara Norfolk (Va.) General Hospital. Sentara Norfolk General Hospital was known as Retreat for the Sick when it opened in 1888. At that time, there were fewer than 200 hospitals in the U.S. Today, Sentara Norfolk General is a 525-bed tertiary care facility and home to the area’s only Level I trauma center. It is part of Sentara Healthcare, which has a medical staff of more than 3,800.

Sentara Norfolk offers comprehensive medical services, and it has earned a reputation for providing quality care. In February, Sentara Norfolk announced the launch of a five-year, $199 million expansion and modernization project aimed at improving the patient experience and bolstering its position as a mid-Atlantic referral center.

In 2015-16, U.S. News & World Report ranked Sentara Norfolk General the No. 2 hospital in Virginia and nationally ranked two of the hospital’s adult specialties. The Magnet-designated hospital is the primary teaching affiliate of Eastern Virginia Medical School.
