Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center | 100 Great Hospitals in America 2015

Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center (Richmond, Va.). VCU Medical Center is a 1,125-bed regional referral center for the state and the region's only Level I trauma center for adults and children. The hospital is affiliated with the VCU School of Medicine, which became the first college in the country to expand the medical school curriculum to four years in 1900.

U.S. News & World Report ranked VCU Medical Center as one of the top 50 hospitals in the country for nephrology, high-performing in 10 other medical specialties, and the best hospital in the Richmond metro area. The hospital was re-designated as a Magnet hospital, in recognition of nursing excellence, in 2011. VCU Medical Center has the area's only National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center — VCU Massey — and full-service children's hospital, Children's Hospital of Richmond at VCU. It is also the largest single provider of indigent health care in Virginia.

Last summer, VCU Medical Center received the American Hospital Association-McKesson Quest for Quality Prize. The award recognized the hospital's developments and improvements on several fronts, including a training program that resulted in a 50 percent reduction to serious safety events in the hospital, an electronic early warning system that alerts caregivers in real time of a patient's declining health status and a community clinic that enhanced care management and care coordination for VCU's sickest, poorest patients.
