University of North Carolina Hospitals (Chapel Hill, N.C.). Founded in 1952 as North Carolina Memorial Hospital, UNC Hospitals has evolved into one of the most prestigious public-owned academic medical centers in the nation.

Memorial Hospital, as well as North Carolina Women's Hospital, North Carolina Children's Hospital, North Carolina Cancer Hospital and North Carolina Neurosciences Hospital. N.C. Cancer Hospital, which opened in August 2009, houses the National Cancer Institute-designated UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center. Overall, UNC Hospitals has more than 8,100 employees, 1,091 attending physicians and 763 residents managing almost 38,000 discharges and 73,000 emergency room visits every year.

During the past several years, UNC Hospitals has collected numerous awards. The Magnet-designated hospital has received recognition from The Leapfrog Group for its patient safety measures and from the National Committee of Quality Assurance for its patient-centered medical home models. In its 2013-14 rankings, U.S. News & World Report said UNC Hospitals was among the best 50 hospitals nationally for otolaryngology, cancer and gynecology.
