NHL's Flames see possible mumps case

Micheal Ferland of the NHL's Calgary Flames is under observation for the mumps, according to an announcement made Sunday on the team's twitter page.

The Flames are the third NHL team to be affected by the mumps this season with both the Minnesota Wild and the Vancouver Canucks experiencing confirmed cases.

The mumps are best known for painful, swollen salivary glands that cause puffy cheeks and a swollen jaw. It is a highly transmissible disease spread via person-to-person contact and is typically accompanied by initial symptoms such as fever, headache, muscle aches, tiredness and loss of appetite.

In 2014, five NHL teams were forced to cancel holiday hospital appearances due a league mumps outbreak.
