PwC: 12 statistics about the current state of Medicaid

Medicaid expansion under the Affordable Care Act has led to one in 17 Americans receiving health coverage via Medicaid programs, a PwC report found.

The report — "The Steadying State of Medicaid in the United States" — is PwC's fourth annual report on the state of Medicaid in the U.S. It analyzes private Medicaid health plans and the continuing effect of Medicaid expansion using state enrollment data from June to August 2016.

Here are 12 statistics from the report.

Medicaid enrollment

1. Medicaid enrollment grew 26 percent over the past two years.

2. In 2016, Medicaid added 2.3 million beneficiaries.

3. The percentage of the U.S. population covered by Medicaid is 23.4 percent, or 75.2 million individuals.

4. California added 850,000 enrollees to Medicaid in the past year. Over the past four years, California added 5.6 million beneficiaries.

5. The state with the fewest beneficiaries is Wyoming, with a total of 64,000 individauls.

6. New Mexico has the largest share of its population enrolled in Medicaid (36.3 percent), followed by the District of Columbia (35.2 percent) and California (34.6 percent).

7. Utah has the smallest share of its population enrolled in Medicaid (9.2 percent), followed by Wyoming (10.9 percent) and Virginia (11.1 percent).

Medicaid managed care

8. Seventy-three percent of Medicaid beneficiaries are covered by private Medicaid health plans, up from 55 percent in 2013.

9. The number of Americans covered by Medicaid managed care plans is 54.7 million, a 60 percent increase from 2013.

10. Private plans enrolled 3.4 million beneficiaries over the past year, and 20.5 million since 2013.

11. The number of beneficiaries enrolled in fee-for-service or public Medicaid managed care decreased 800,000 in the past year, and has decreased 2.8 million since 2013.

12. The number of private Medicaid health plans decreased from 195 to 183 from 2015 to 2016.
