iVantage Health Analytics has released the best American cities for healthcare as determined by its Hospital Strength INDEX, a rating system analyzing publicly available data to measure hospitals across ten pillars of performance and 66 metrics.

Those metrics include competitive strength, market growth, market size, population risk, quality, costs, patient perspectives and financial stability.

Taking into account the data from more than 4,200 hospitals studied, here are the 10 best cities for healthcare, according to the Hospital Strength INDEX, in alphabetical order.

Atlanta
Boston
Charlotte, N.C.
Chicago
Minneapolis
New York
Philadelphia
Portland, Ore.
St. Louis
Washington, D.C.

According to the report, these top healthcare markets serve 19 percent of the U.S. population, approximately 60 million people.

The study also estimates if lower-performing markets improve to meet the standards of the top ranked markets, they could save 3,962,850 years of potential lives lost. Contextualized, that equates to adding one year of life to every citizen in Los Angeles, according to the report.

Additionally, the top performing markets could potentially add $513 billion to the gross domestic product through potential extended life, through productivity, taxes, manufacturing and purchasing of goods and services, according to John Morrow, iVantage Health Analytics executive vice president.

"This year's findings confirm the premise of the new healthcare," Mr. Morrow said in the report. "It sheds new light on hospital and population performance and the effect both have on the health of local communities and the economy."
