Rhode Island hospital worker returns $9k found in laundry room dryer

A Providence, R.I.-based The Miriam Hospital employee engaged in some money laundering with a positive spin last month after he helped return $9,100 in cash back to its rightful owner, according to the Providence Journal.

Steven Ledo, 62, said he was working in The Miriam Hospital laundry room last month when he noticed a flurry of $50 and $100 bills flowing out of a dryer. He said he proceeded to count the bills, which amounted to $9,100 in various denominations.

Mr. Ledo said he turned the cash over to administrators, who returned the money to an unnamed female patient, the report states. He said he didn't ask the patient — who has since been discharged from the facility — what the money was for, but hospital administrators allegedly determined the money didn't appear to be anything suspicious.

Mr. Ledo told the Providence Journal he never considered pocketing the money.

"My brain was thinking not to leave it. I just wanted to protect it," he told the publication Aug. 9. "It boils down to how you were brought up. When you do something good inside, you feel good and clean."

Hospital executives reportedly plan to honor Mr. Ledo for exemplifying "Miriam Gold" standard, according to the report.
