A new program at the health system called the Mission Minimum raises the minimum hourly rate to $11. The program will bump up the hourly rate for more than 200 employees, according to a Citizen-Times report.
The affected employees, which include food service and cleaning workers, will start seeing the raises in their paychecks Aug. 25.
Taylor Foss, senior vice president of organizational transformation at Mission Health, said in a statement to the Citizen-Times that the change supports the organization’s philosophy of offering market-competitive and living wages.
According to the report, North Carolina’s minimum wage is $7.25 an hour, but Just Economics of Western North Carolina, a local nonprofit, estimates workers need at least $11 an hour to get by.
