Bristol Hospital cuts 43 jobs: 5 things to know

Bristol (Conn.) Hospital has eliminated 43 positions, citing cuts to Medicaid and Medicare payments, according to a CT Mirror report.

Here are five things to know about the layoffs.

1. Nineteen layoffs occurred Friday, while 18 occurred over the past eight weeks and another six vacant positions are being eliminated, Bristol Hospital CEO Kurt Barwis wrote in a memo to staff, volunteers and community members Friday, according to the report.

2. The layoffs reduce the hospital's workforce by 5 percent.

3. The layoffs, along with eliminating the vacant positions, will save Bristol Hospital $3.6 million.

4. The layoffs come as the hospital is facing "an unprecedented cut" in Medicaid payments — $4.5 million — in the upcoming fiscal year, and a $2.5 million cut to Medicare payments starting in October, according to the report.

5. Bristol Hospital is not the only Connecticut healthcare organization making cuts. Yale New Haven Health System in New Haven is closing a clinic in Branford and another in East Haven as part of an effort to address significant state budget cuts. Additionally, Hartford (Conn.) HealthCare is eliminating the equivalent of about 335 full-time jobs, which will affect 418 staff members throughout the system.
