This little-known healthcare startup generated $1B for Sony last year

You may not have heard of M3, a Tokyo-based company that runs a medical web portal, but the company netted Sony over $1 billion in 2015, according to Bloomberg.

Sony invested in M3 in 2003, went public in 2004, and in the past year its value has grown more than 50 percent. Earlier this year, M3 itself made a strategic move toward the startup market, announcing the creation of M3i, a unit geared toward scouting new companies for investment, according to Bloomberg.

M3's portal is aimed at giving physicians access to the latest studies and drug information while also enabling clinicians to network with one another.

"Our company name M3 represents the three Ms of Medicine, Media, and Metamorphosis. Our company was founded with the goal of changing the world of medicine through making full use of the power of the internet," reads a statement on the company's website.
