10 things to know about HFMA's 2015 Annual National Institute conference

The Healthcare Financial Management Association will host its Annual National Institute conference from June 22 to 25 at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida.

Here are 10 things to know about HFMA's ANI 2015 conference.

1. The first ANI was held in 1952 at Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind. The meeting drew 170 attendees from 32 states and four Canadian provinces. Since then, conference attendance has increased almost every year. Today, ANI is the premier annual educational event for healthcare finance executives, and an average of 5,000 people attend the conference.

2. Over 400 businesses will have booths in the exhibit hall, which will be open during specialized hours on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Top exhibitors include 3M Health Information Systems, RelayHealth, Optum360/EHR, Cerner Corporation and Parallon.

3. Three keynote presentations will take place this year. Featured speakers include:

  • Dan Heath, founder of Change Academy and best-selling co-author of "Made to Stick," "Switch" and "Decisive" — June 22, 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.
  • Ian Morrison, internationally renowned healthcare futurist — June 23, 8:00 to 9:30 a.m.
  • Peter Sheahan, founder of ChangeLabs — June 25, 8:00 to 9:15 a.m.

4. More than 90 sessions will occur over the course of the conference. Eight central themes will be covered across the sessions:

  • Business, intelligence, data and analytics
  • Clinical integration
  • Collaboration for decision making
  • Cost management/margin transformation
  • Finance/capital markets
  • Payment trends and delivery models
  • Regulatory and compliance updates
  • Revenue cycle and the patient experience

5. ANI will hold special Career Skills Early Riser sessions from 7:00 to 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 23. Attendees will get the chance to hear from experts and engage in peer-to-peer conversations. Topics include career development, coaching and mentoring, women in leadership roles and cultivating leadership competencies.

6. On Thursday, June 25 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., HFMA will offer Innovation Labs which offer solutions information to synthesize learning about specific topics, including:

  • Planning for physician hires
  • Implementing an activity-based cost management system
  • Managing population health via provider-payer collaboration
  • Successful revenue cycle process improvement in physician practices
  • Creating clinical and financial data mining tools to achieve the triple aim

7. For the first time ever, HFMA will hold an Early Careerists Networking Event on Tuesday, June 23 from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. This event, presented by the HFMA Early Careerist Task Force, works to support new entrants to the healthcare industry and provide them with resources they will need for a fulfilling career in healthcare finance.

8. Numerous awards will be presented on Tuesday, June 23 at the Annual Chapter Awards Dinner, such as the MAP Award for High Performance in Revenue Cycle, which recognizes hospitals, health systems and physician practices whose strategies have allowed them to achieve excellence in revenue cycle performance. Other awards include:

  • The Robert M. Shelton Award for Sustained Chapter Excellence
  • The Helen M. Yerger Special Recognition Award
  • The C. Henry Hottum Award for Educational Performance Improvement
  • Award of Excellence for Improved Chapter Performance
  • Awards of Excellence for Certification: Bronze, Silver and Gold Levels
  • Awards of Excellence for Membership Growth and Retention: Bronze, Silver and Gold Levels
  • Awards of Excellence for Education
  • The Fredrick C. Morgan Individual Achievement Award

9. After most session end by the late afternoon, HFMA will offer evening networking receptions, including:

  • Post Welcome Reception at Cuba Libre, Orlando's premiere Cuban restaurant and nightclub — Monday, June 22, 8:00 to 11:00 p.m.
  • RelayHealth Blues Bash All-Show Party at BB King's Blues Club at Pointe Orlando — Tuesday, June 23, 7:00 to 10:00 p.m.
  • Connect. Celebrate. hosted by HFMA's Chair — Wednesday, June 24, 6:00 to 10:00 p.m.
