Which physician specialties feel most, least fairly compensated?

Physicians working in some of the highest-earning specialties — such as orthopedics and cardiology — are among some of the least satisfied physicians when in comes to compensation, according to a new Medscape report.

The 2015 Medscape Physician Compensation Report includes responses from more than 19,500 physicians across 26 specialties.

The physicians who are most likely to feel fairly compensated work in the following specialties:

  • Dermatologists — 61 percent feel they are fairly compensated
  • Emergency medicine — 60 percent
  • Pathology — 60 percent
  • Psychiatry & mental health — 56 percent
  • Anesthesiology — 53 percent
  • Radiology — 53 percent
  • Pediatrics — 50 percent

Meanwhile, the physicians who are least likely to feel fairly compensated work in these specialties:

  • Ophthalmology — 40 percent feel they are fairly compensated
  • Allergy & immunology — 41 percent
  • General surgery — 41 percent
  • Nephrology — 42 percent
  • Diabetes & endocrinology — 42 percent
  • Orthopedics — 42 percent
  • Urology — 43 percent
  • Plastic surgery — 44 percent
  • Oncology — 44 percent
  • Cardiology — 44 percent
