The volume of job applicants is overwhelming for some employers. Some of these applications are unfinished or badly completed, yet still need to be reviewed by hiring managers, adding to the time and complexity of the process.

Other employers are hiring internally instead of externally, opting to promote employees who have been with the company for longer.

Companies are also concerned about high turnover rates and want to ensure candidates they hire will stay with them for a while. This can lead to hiring managers turning down overqualified candidates who they think may get bored and move on quickly.

Other workers report being turned down for not being experienced enough, as employers still signal wanting specific skills and experience despite the shortages.
