The workforce industry keeps selling “more.” Health systems need something else.

Everyone is selling scale, features and AI. Health systems need fill, execution, quality and accountability. They should hold every workforce partner to that standard, including us.

For most of my 20 years in workforce strategy, our industry has sold the same idea in new packaging: more services, more features, more data and now AI. Some of it helps. But “more” is the newest shiny object. It does not drive the results health systems need.

The leaders I talk with want experienced people running their workforce programs and qualified healthcare professionals who start on time. They want a clear view of what they spend and what they get for it. They also want partners who show up, tell the truth, work through opportunities with them, and deliver innovation through technology.

That is how the next era of healthcare workforce solutions will be judged.

People drive a program. Technology helps them move sooner.

Health systems need a clear view of what is happening across their workforce now. That is harder than it sounds when contingent labor spans facilities, specialties, suppliers and markets.

The goal is not just more data. It is better visibility into demand, spend, supplier performance and workforce trends so leaders can make decisions faster and with confidence. That is the thinking behind Intellify. It brings those pieces together in one place, whether we are managing the workforce program or the health system is managing it directly.

That visibility only matters if experienced people know what to do with it. The strongest workforce programs are run by people who understand the organization, know where demand is shifting, and can act before a small issue becomes a larger one.

Technology should help teams see those signals earlier. That is where AI has a practical role in Intellify. It can help identify qualified travelers earlier in the process based on the specific requirements of the hospital, unit and specialty, surface changes in supplier performance, and flag shifts in demand before they become larger issues.

The judgment still sits with the people running the program.

Transparency must be real

Most discussion about transparency in our industry is about the market. The complicated discussion is about your program.

If one partner runs your program and fills your orders, you should see how that partner performs against every other supplier on the panel. A good partner fills each need with the right available professional, whether that person comes from us or a supplier partner.

Clients told us transparency is key, and we did something about it.  We built that standard into Intellify. Cross Country is measured on the same terms as every supplier on the panel. It is not a report we prepare or a spreadsheet we control. It is in the system and fully visible.

Growth should never change who shows up

Every health system leader has seen it happen. A partner grows, and the relationship changes. Executives stop showing up, decisions pass through layers and the program starts to feel like an account number.

Clients are right to expect more. The leaders who know their programs should come to business reviews, spend time at their facilities and be easy to reach. Technology can keep a program’s results in view as it grows. It cannot replace the leader who picks up the phone.

What we are doing about it

That thinking is shaping Cross Country’s next chapter. We are focusing on what our clients value most: the right healthcare talent, quality workforce programs and clear visibility through Intellify. That is where our investment is going.

As we grow, we are committing to keeping the relationships, access and accountability our clients expect.

The future will belong to the partner that brings talent, program expertise and technology together. That partner lets the client see all of it and stays accountable for the result. Hold every partner to that standard, including us.
