According to a Sept. 21 news release, the funds will provide scholarships for students using approved EMS education programs and licensed EMS providers, giving special attention to rural and other underserved areas of the state.
Currently, about 72,000 certified EMS workers operate on about 5,000 ambulances in the state. However, the demand for EMS professionals continues to increase, particularly in rural areas, due to a lack of available candidates, difficult work conditions and geographic obstacles, according to the release.
Joseph Schmider, EMS director for the Texas Department of State Health Services, encouraged interested candidates to apply for the scholarships.
“If you want to help your neighbor, we are looking for you. And if you’re looking for an exciting career or volunteer opportunity, consider emergency medical services,” Mr. Schmider said.
EMS training programs in Texas can be completed in as little as 15 weeks, according to the release.
