St. Vincent’s merged with a struggling Eastern Health System in 2007, and some of the layoffs come as St. Vincent’s continues to integrate Eastern Health and its hospitals in the system.
In addition to the 74 layoffs, St. Vincent’s closed 55 open positions. The removal of jobs affects about 2 percent of the four-hospital system’s employees. St. Vincent’s did not fire any nurses providing bedside care, according to The Birmingham News.
