Pennsylvania has become the 30th state to join the PA Licensure Compact, joining neighboring member states Ohio, West Virginia, Delaware and New Jersey.
Gov. Josh Shapiro signed House Bill 1961, now Act 76, Oct. 22. Pennsylvania has nearly 13,000 physician assistants, and joining the compact was part of the state’s Rural Health Transformation Program application, according to an Oct. 26 news release from the American Academy of Physician Associates.
Once operational, the compact will allow eligible physician assistants to practice in other member states without applying for a separate license in each one. The PA Compact Commission, which administers the compact, expects privileges to be available by early to mid-2027.
“Joining the PA Licensure Compact will reduce licensing barriers, support workforce mobility and create opportunities to expand access to care,” said Jennifer Campbell, PA-C, president of the Pennsylvania Society of Physician Associates, in the release.
