Patient assaults 3 staff members at New Hampshire Hospital: 6 things to know

Patient assaults on staff continue to be an issue at Concord-based New Hampshire Hospital, according to a New Hampshire Union Leader report.

Here are six things to know.

1. The state psychiatric hospital's new CEO, Lori Shibinette, told the publication a young patient assaulted three staff members and damaged property March 9.

2. Ms. Shibinette told the Union Leader: "The team members were treated for any injuries and returned to work. The NHH team responded to the incident professionally and therapeutically, which de-escalated the incident and contained any damage."

3. The March 9 incident is just one of the various recent patient-led assaults on healthcare workers at New Hampshire's state psychiatric facilities. Last October, an uptick in such assaults prompted Ms. Shibinette to head up an investigation into state psychiatric facilities such as NHH.

4. Ms. Shibinette told the Union Leader NHH is still examining data to get a deeper sense of the issue and whether, as suspected, there is a growing number of violent and aggressive youth being admitted.

5. Meanwhile, efforts to pass state legislation to address worker protections has been unsuccessful, according to the report.
